Let’s Get Lost

By March 28, 2022Uncategorized

Getting lost is not a matter of geography so much as identity; a passionate desire, even an urgent need, to become no one and anyone, to shake off the shackles of who you are not in order to become who you are.”

One day a young woman decided to go for a hike in the woods. At the end of the day she couldn’t find a path out of the wilderness. Accustomed to hiking, she settled herself in and ate some of her supplies and drank some water and told herself that the next day she would find her way out of the woods but she did not. On the third day she panicked. Her food and water were gone and she could not find the path that would lead her out of the woods and home. In fear and despair she fell to her knees and  cried out, “Help me! Someone! Help me!” Just then an old woman wrapped in a dress of cobwebs and leaves wearing shoes of bark and vines came shuffling out of the woods towards the woman.
“Oh, thank goodness! Please, can you help me find my way out of the woods so I can go home? I have been wandering in this wilderness for three days!” she cried in anguish.
The old woman looked at her and smiled, “I have been wandering in this wood for over three years!”
“Three years?” the young woman said choking back her disappointment.

“Yes, and I can happily tell you that while I have not yet found the one path that will lead us out of the woods I have successfully identified almost all the paths that will not lead us out.”

Ah, ain’t it the truth though? We successfully find our way by not finding our way. Each disappointment closes a door to what’s not working in our lives and squeezes us toward the path that will work. And it doesn’t happen overnight. Your twenty year old self isn’t your fifty year old self.

Paths change as we grow and age. It can be scary to let things go and allow yourself to change. Telling and listening to a story will help you find your way. I hope you can join me at these upcoming performances to listen to great stories that may help you find your way home.
